God forbid I ever say no to free food, and so the other day, I found myself breakfasting on a friend's abandoned protein bar that I decided it was my personal mission to save from the trash. The protein bar tasted as fine as a protein bar can, but it was also small — like, itsy-bitsy small. The package said its ingredients included a hyper-specific 1.5 egg whites and seven (7) peanuts. My wee bar wasn't an anomaly, it's part of a broader trend: The mini-fication of food. The United States has long been known for its extra-large food portions . We've got king-size candy bars and family-size chip bags and all-you-can-eat buffets. Many restaurants put calorie counts on their menus that can serve as a PSA for diners that they really ought to take half of their meal to go. More recently, however, food has started to move in the opposite direction.
