What role does pet insurance play in covering weight-loss treatments? What are the best gifts for men? A San Francisco pharmaceutical company has started a clinical trial that uses implants to help cats lose weight, and the first feline has already received a dose. Calling the research “ManagEment of OverWeight cats with OKV-119” (MEOW-1), OKAVA Pharmaceuticals said the trial marks the world's first GLP-1 weight loss therapy for pets. The device, the OKV-119, is a GLP-1 implant – a small device inserted under the skin that can deliver doses of medication for up to six months – the company said in a Dec. 3 press release. Feline obesity is one of the most common nutritional disorders among domestic cats, according to the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine Among the claims OKAVA Pharmaceuticals made about the device is that it can: Improve cardiometabolic health in cats, or how the heart and blood vessels function. Improve how the body processes energy.
