The main force in the background is the US 10 year Treasury yield sitting near 4.4% to 4.48%, which means borrowing costs across mortgages, credit cards and business loans remain relatively high. At the same time, the University of Michigan survey shows consumer sentiment at 53.3, close to past lows, and 1 year inflation expectations revised up to 3.8%, so households feel squeezed. The key question for investors now is whether higher for longer borrowing costs and cautious consumers will weigh more on interest sensitive sectors such as real estate and smaller companies, or on growth focused areas such as technology that rely heavily on expectations for future earnings.
