It's a David and Goliath battle with billions at stake for music companies and investors who may get a big hit – and not the kind they like – if the U.S. Supreme Court decides music creators and their heirs can get back their copyrights worldwide. Tim Kappel, a New Orleans-based attorney, beat a band of big time New York music business litigators in a federal courtroom in Baton Rouge in June of 2024. And then he did it again earlier this year in the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, which interprets the law of the land for Louisiana, Texas and Mississippi. The case, Vetter v. Resnik , involves the song “Double Shot (Of My Baby's Love),” a dumb-witty drinking ditty that, while never much of a moneymaker, was once dubbed by Bruce Springsteen as "the greatest fraternity rock song of all time."
