Vodafone Dividend Cut Is A 5G Broadside To BT Nick Read, chief executive officer of Vodafone Group Plc, has announced a share dividend decrease. © 2019 Bloomberg Finance LP The results from Vodafone show that it’s rolling up it’s sleeves for a fight with BT, while the owner of the EE network recently announced that it was holding its dividend, and announced lacklustre fibre to the home ambitions, Vodafone has almost halved it’s payments to shareholders from 15 cents a share to nine cents. This may well be a reflection of where the networks are with spectrum. BT has substantial spectrum holdings and will only be allowed to buy into the forthcoming 700 MHz auction if it relinquishes some of the higher frequencies, selling them on to rivals. It may be that BT is looking to those sales to part fund 5G development. But 5G will be expensive and lucrative. It’s the solution to the mobile networks’ biggest fear: becoming a dumb pipe. With 5G comes the opportunity for the mobile phone network
