This follows an industry shift as airlines tie free internet to their cash-cow loyalty programs. Carriers will still compete on speed and reliability, with some having an edge with Starlink. Free in-flight WiFi, once a premium perk, has become a table-stakes offering, and American Airlines is finally catching up as airlines use it to hook loyalty members. On Tuesday, the Texas airline said it will begin rolling out free, high-speed WiFi on more than 1,400 mainline narrowbody and dual-class regional aircraft. By early spring, nearly every American flight — including new Boeing 787s serving long-haul international routes — will offer the service. American said this will make it the airline with free WiFi on more planes than any other carrier in the world. Its WiFi is sponsored by AT&T and powered by satellites
