Verizon Communications Inc. shares are up 0.8% in premarket trading Friday after the company topped earnings expectations but saw revenue decline as fewer consumers made device purchases due to the COVID-19 outbreak. The company posted net income of $4.28 billion, or $1 a share, down from $5.16 billion, or $1.22 a share, in the year-earlier period. Adjusted earnings per share rose to $1.26 from $1.20 and exceeded the FactSet consensus view, which called for $1.22. Verizon said that its first-quarter EPS included a pre-tax loss from special items of roughly $1.4 billion, of which $1.2 billion was related to a recent spectrum auction. Operating revenue fell to $31.6 billion from $32.1 billion, while analysts had been modeling $32.4 billion. The company said overall revenue was impacted by declines in equipment revenue due to the COVID-19 outbreak, echoing similar comments from AT&T Inc. earlier in the week.
