But the Trump administration's unprecedented criminal investigation into Jerome Powell may not achieve any of these outcomes. In fact, the shocking escalation of the long-running Trump-Powell feud could end up backfiring. It could delay rate cuts, fuel jitters on Wall Street and persuade Powell to stick around long after his term as chair expires in May. The Justice Department's threat to criminally indict Powell may even make it harder for Trump to replace Powell with a loyalist. “This is lawfare at its worst,” former Dallas Fed president Richard Fisher told CNN on Monday in a phone interview. “I find it hard to believe they would stoop to this level. This is a step too far.” Fisher, who sits on the board of directors at CNN parent Warner Bros.
