Seagate reported their quarter early on April 22 and Western Digital will make its report on May 1. Following are our observations and estimates for the impact of COVID on the HDD in CQ1 2020 and going forward into the current quarter.In the Seagate report, the company said that in CQ1 2020 it shipped 120.2 Exabytes of hard disk drive (HDD) storage capacity with an average HDD capacity of 4.1 TB (or 29.3 M HDDs). This is down 9.3% from the CQ4 2019 quarter. At the same time, average sales prices (ASPs) for its HDDs increased to $86.21 (a 12.5% increase from Seagate’s ASP in CQ4 2019). While total shipped HDDs declined, total HDD revenue increased quarter to quarter by about 1.8% (due to increased sales of higher capacity and more expensive per unit HDDs.This shipped capacity growth was in what Seagate calls the Mass Capacity HDD market.
