Most investors now understand the phrase “structural alpha” better than they did a few years ago. That does not mean they understand the concept. The mistake is thinking “structural alpha” is simply another label for spin-offs, breakups, restructurings, activist campaigns, or special situations. It is not. Those are the events. Structural alpha is the mispricing created when ownership, incentives, mandates, and forced behavior change faster than the market can properly adjust. A spin-off by itself is not alpha.
