Earlier this year, Circana data showed that breakfast traffic increased for the first time since 2023 as more workers return to the office However, a slowing economy compounded by plummeting consumer sentiment has thrown a wrench into the daypart's full recovery. “Breakfast tends to be the most economically sensitive daypart,” McDonald's chief executive officer Chris Kempczinski recently told analysts. “It's an easy daypart to either skip or eat at home. Breakfast continues to be under pressure as a daypart industrywide.” He doesn't expect that to change until “broader macroeconomic” conditions change. Wendy's, however, may not have the luxury of waiting things out. The chain has a complicated history with the daypart, including three failed rollouts dating back to 1985.
