Nonfarm payrolls rose by 178,000 in March, marking the strongest gain since the end of 2024 and coming in above all estimates in a Bloomberg survey, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This follows a revised decline of 133,000 jobs in February, when severe winter weather and a strike involving more than 30,000 health-care workers weighed heavily on hiring. The March rebound was led by a recovery in health-care employment as those workers returned, while gains were also observed across construction, leisure and hospitality, and manufacturing, with a measure of hiring breadth rising to the highest level in more than two years, suggesting labor demand could be firming in the near term.
