Photo: Getty I started my career as a COBOL programmer on mainframes for what is now known as Willis Towers Watson. My job was to create employee flexible benefits statements. Given a list of calculations and the employee data record, I calculated entitlement for vacation, life insurance and medical benefits. To be frank, I was not that good at it at first. My output was riddled with errors. I kept trying to correct my mistakes, but something just didn’t click. I couldn’t get it right until one thing finally changed -- and that one thing wasn’t me. Instead, my supervisor started including me in meetings to help create the formulas and basis for the calculations. Overnight, I went from making mistakes to having nearly perfect outcomes.
