While annual inflation held steady at a rate of 2.7% in December, grocery prices continued to rise, the Labor Department said Jan. 13. The latest Consumer Price Index report showed the cost of food at home increased 0.7% in December, exceeding the last available monthly increases of 0.3% in September and 0.6% in August. Last month, a Swiftly survey found that 68% of shoppers said they were struggling to afford groceries. Over the last 12 months, food at home costs have increased 2.4%. “Washington will take a victory lap if CPI is flat, but that just means prices stopped spiraling,” Cardiff Founder and CEO William Stern said in a note to USA TODAY. “They never came down... and families feel that every time they check out.” President Donald Trump did tout the Jan. 13 CPI report release, renewing his calls for the Fed to cut interest rates in a Truth Social post.
