Michael Gleeson said the company was sorry for the “anxiety” caused by payroll issues, which is understood to have impacted 30,000 employees. Some were underpaid and others were overpaid because of problems with the changeover. Payroll issues have been ongoing for two months and were caused by Asda switching away from IT systems used by its previous owner, Walmart. The changeover is being personally overseen by Asda's co-owner Mohsin Issa while the supermarket hunts for a new chief executive. Mr Issa has been running the supermarket since 2021. The Telegraph revealed last weekend that bosses at the supermarket, which is owned by Mohsin and his brother Zuber Issa, were warned of potential issues with the upgrade but pressed ahead anyway. It has sparked calls from unions for Mohsin Issa to make a personal apology.
