Or you just cannot seem to find the time or the forms as April 15 nears. What to do? If you've done absolutely nothing up until now or you're totally stumped over some complicated new deductions, well, you might be better off filing for an extension — especially if you don't owe any money. Or you still can buckle down, do your return right and move on, baby. Taxpayers already filed nearly 88.4 million federal income tax returns through March 27, according to seasonal statistics released by the Internal Revenue Service. That is down 1.3% from the same time a year ago. The IRS has processed 87.5 million returns through late March, down 1.1% from the same time frame a year ago. The average federal income tax refund was $3,521 — up 11.1% or $351— through March 27. The IRS also noted that through March 20 more than 80% of refunds were issued in less than 21 days.
