The Craig 1 coal unit, partially owned by Fort Collins power provider Platte River Power Authority, is now the subject of two separate lawsuits challenging a federal government order. The state of Colorado and three environmental groups are suing the U.S. Department of Energy over its Dec. 30 emergency order requiring the plant to remain available for operation only a day before its long-planned closure. On March 2, the Department of Energy denied an appeal from those parties, along with plant co-owners PRPA and Tri-State Energy, who requested a rehearing on the matter. PRPA does not comment on pending litigation, Kendal Perez, a PRPA spokesperson, told the Coloradoan on March 18. However, she pointed to the organization's January joint filing with Tri-State, saying PRPA still supports a rehearing.
