Traders took two days to see through it, yet the press continues to run with the story, with an oil fever all of their own. Venezuela does hold promise for oil. But it will require scale. So far, the majors are staying uncommitted. Most of the oil executives on the White House dais this past Friday have a different story to tell — one of a long trail of tears after being stung by nationalizations and by a government that is still in place. Chevron was there — the only one in attendance at the White House still operating in Venezuela ( producing 240,000 barrels of oil per day ). This is after agreeing to assume minority status in joint ventures after nationalization and taking a $2.6 billion write-off “due to a deteriorating operating environment” in 2020. Twice-burned Exxon was there as well, suggesting Venezuela was “uninvestable.” That's fair enough, given Exxon is still owed $1 billion from expropriation , with its real losses being multiples greater than that.
