A staggering 80 per cent of the world's greenhouse gas emissions are linked to just 57 companies, according to . Among those, ExxonMobil is the world's biggest investor-owned contributor. Shell is the second. Both have attracted vocal criticism from activists, while their environmental record and their historical stance on climate change have been the subject of several court cases. Financially, though, both companies were solid last year. Exxon reported net profits of $36bn in 2023 and Shell $19.63bn, helped by high oil and gas prices. Even more alarming for campaigners is the fact that Exxon has enjoyed greater success than Shell, despite the latter setting more ambitious climate change targets. Shell's reward for adopting a more proactive stance on climate change has been an increase in share price of less than 8% over the past 5 years.
