This environment hasn't been kind to many restaurant operators, but the fast-casual pizza category seems to be taking particularly tough blows of late. Pieology announced this week it is closing all five of its locations in Hawaii. According to local reports , the closures will happen prior to mid-May and will impact more than 50 positions. Franchisee Cotti Foods Pizza Hawaii cited business failure for the decision. The California-based chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in November after its sales dropped by more than 10% year-over-year in 2024 . The chain closed 17 locations ahead of that filing, whittling the system down to 45 units. The company finished 2024 with 103 locations, according to Technomic data. Pieology was founded in 2011 and is widely considered to be a pioneer of the build-your-own pizza category, alongside Blaze, MOD Pizza, Your Pie, PizzaRev, Uncle Maddio's, Fired Pie, and others.
