Opinion: These 4 tech giants should make you think twice about this stock market Measuring the stock market’s valuation is made even more difficult than usual because of the dominant role currently played by a few giant technology companies. Consider the four companies in the S&P 500 SPX, -0.92% , other than Apple AAPL, -0.82% , with the largest market-caps currently — Alphabet (a.k.a Google) GOOGL, -1.61% , Amazon. AMZN, -1.03% Microsoft MSFT, -1.18% and Facebook FB, -1.08% . The average P/E ratio of these four, based on trailing 12 months earnings, is 101.7 — versus 25.6 for the S&P 500. If we focus on projected earnings over the next 12 months, these four companies’ average P/E is 57.2, compared to 17.6 for the S&P 500. Because these four firms’ market caps dominate cap-weighted indices such as the S&P 500, their sky-high P/Es have an outsized influence. If you eliminated these four from consideration, the S&P 500’s P/E would drop nearly 10%. It’s hard to believe
