According to a new industry analysis from Bank of America Corp (NYSE:BAC), players like TJX Companies Inc (NYSE:TJX), Ross Stores Inc (NASDAQ:ROST), and Burlington Stores Inc (NYSE:BURL) are utilizing higher Average Unit Retail (AUR) gains to offset margin pressure. The price adjustments allow retailers to ship and distribute fewer units for every dollar of sales, creating a structural hedge against rising transport overheads. Diesel surges and the 2H margin outlook The current environment remains challenging, but the scale of the pressure is significantly lower than the disruptions seen in 2021/22. Ocean freight rates are currently up 8%, a stark contrast to the 250% surge seen four years ago. However, diesel prices have climbed 50% year-over-year to $5.38 per gallon. The spike is expected to hit margins almost immediately through domestic fuel surcharges.
