BMO senior economist Robert Kavcic notes slow mortgage growth which will act as a marginal headwind for domestic bank profits, “The subdued housing market continues to weigh on residential mortgage credit growth in Canada. Growth is now running at 4.8 per cent year-over-year, but has slowed to just 2.5 per cent annualized in the latest month. Soft sales volumes and lower prices are likely weighing on overall growth. Meantime, a wave of renewals into higher mortgage rates, while manageable, is crimping the flexibility of households (i.e., to buy investment properties, etc.).
