Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. said late Friday it extended its namesake's store closures until at least May 16 and it has brought back "several hundred" of furloughed employees to support an 85% surge in online sales. About a quarter of its stores has been converted to regional warehouses, almost doubling the retailer's digital fulfillment capacity to support that surge, Bed Bath & Beyond said. In addition to the employees back to work, "hundreds more new positions have been created in the company's e-commerce distribution centers to meet the increased demand across digital channels, where sales have grown by over 85% for the month of April to-date," the company said. Extending store closures also extends the furlough for most of its salespeople and some of its corporate employees, with the retailer promising to pay 100% of healthcare premiums until further notice.
