Federal Reserve will keep rates higher for longer. Equities rebounded after their worst run this year — in a slide that sent almost 60 per cent of the S&P 500's shares to one-month lows — the most since the regional-bank crisis in March 2023. After a torrid first quarter, investors have grown increasingly skeptical about near-term gains, with the focus shifting to whether Corporate America will validate the bullish forecasts for 2024. Corporate earnings will need to do the heavy lifting to drive a further rally in stocks, as investors worry about still elevated interest rates and geopolitical uncertainty, according to Barclays Plc strategists led by Emmanuel Cau. A decline in estimates offers “room for beats,” while the recent pullback in markets “has reduced froth,” they wrote. The S&P 500 rose to around 5,070.
