"It opens up a whole new generation of homeowners," Better's chief told Investopedia . But there are details you should know about if you're considering using one. New mortgage offerings are beckoning at the "crypto rich." But what do they actually do? At a high level, they let people who hold crypto use it to help fund home purchases. But as with most financial products, it pays to understand the details. Better Home & Finance ( BETR ) and Coinbase ( COIN ) are launching what they call the first crypto-backed conforming mortgage , which lets buyers pledge their bitcoin or usdc, Circle's stablecoin, as collateral for home loans. While crypto-backed mortgages (and other loans) aren't new, this offering is notable in part because the government-sponsored Federal National Mortgage Association, or Fannie Mae , will take those loans like any other mortgage, potentially meaning better rates for buyers.
