Their goal: to prove that a handheld device could carbonate water without the environmental toll of aluminum cans or the counter-space demands of bulky machines. That makeshift prototype, assembled in 2019, would become Aerflo , a portable carbonation system that its founders say represents a fundamental challenge to how Americans consume the 3 billion gallons of sparkling water they buy annually. Five years and more than $10 million in investment later, the company is making a case that sustainability and consumer convenience need not be at odds. "We wanted to design a business model where just by existing, that inherent next dollar of revenue meant that in some way the world is a better place," said John Thorp, who co-founded Aerflo with Buzz Wiggins. “Nothing against the 1% philanthropy model, but we wanted to make it inherent to the company.” The timing proved prescient.
