The company's new chairman, Albert Manifold, has turned to its first female chief executive in the company's history as he seeks to spark a turnaround in a brutal oil market On Wednesday, the FTSE 100 giant named Meg O'Neill as replacement for exiting boss Murray Auchincloss in an abrupt announcement which stunned the City and Wall Street. Ms O'Neill is currently chief executive of Woodside Petroleum and her appointment marks the rare hiring of an outsider to lead the oil major. Previous BP bosses have been promoted internally. Mr Manifold said: “Progress has been made in recent years, but increased rigor and diligence are required to make the necessary transformative changes to maximise value for our shareholders.” Mr Auchincloss will temporarily be replaced by Carol Howle, current executive vice president in the supply, trading and shipping unit, until Ms O'Neill takes over.
