Rising gas prices are leading more U.S. drivers to consider hybrid and electric vehicles. New electric cars cost more on average than new gas-powered cars, but many hybrid models are more budget-friendly. Owners of electric vehicles can save thousands of dollars in fuel and maintenance costs over the life of the car. As gas prices rise, so is the number of United States drivers who are considering , according to Edmunds.com. The website said in a post released on Wednesday March 11 "in the week starting March 2, shopper consideration of electrified vehicles (hybrids, plug-in hybrids and battery electric vehicles) accounted for 22.4% of all vehicle research activity on Edmunds, up from 20.7% the previous week." "Most of that increase was driven by growing shopper interest in battery electric vehicles, which saw the largest gain among electrified powertrains during this time period," Edmunds analyst Jessica Caldwell said in a note.
