The Cincinnati-based regional bank said it will finalize the merger on Feb. 1. The banks said the deal is subject to customary closing conditions, according to a joint statement On Jan. 6, shareholders of both banks overwhelming approved the deal. “We are thrilled ... Together, Fifth Third and Comerica will create a stronger, more diversified bank with industry-leading capabilities," Fifth Third CEO Tim Spence said in a Jan. 13 statement, noting the deal will boost the lender's presence in the Southwest U.S. There are no Comerica branches in Ohio and the deal is not expected to change Fifth Third's banking in its hometown. But the deal adds more than 350 branches, enhancing the bank's presence in Texas, Arizona, California and Michigan. Fifth Third currently operates almost 1,100 locations.
