Home-builder confidence dips in March, but the coronavirus will soon weigh on construction firms The numbers: Home builders were still relatively upbeat in early March, but that was before the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak began to create massive turmoil in the markets and broader economy. The National Association of Home Builders’ monthly confidence index dropped two points to 72 in March from 74 the month prior , the trade group said Tuesday . For context, that’s only four points below December’s figure, which represented the highest index reading in over 20 years. Index readings above 50 indicate improving confidence, while a figure below that threshold would signal the opposite. One big caveat: Half of the builder responses were collected before March 4. The coronavirus outbreak didn’t turn into a full-fledged crisis until nearly a week later.
