GO TO PAGE Here's a little secret about visiting Silicon Valley on weekends: nobody's there. The badge scanners mostly go dark Friday at six, and suddenly this laptop-and-IPO landscape transforms into something almost...livable. After four years of Stanford parent weekends (our son's a senior there; where did the time go?), I've learned that the Valley off the clock is an entirely different animal. That starts with the economics of it all. While most American cities aim to gouge you on weekends, Silicon Valley operates on tech-traveler logic. The fewer the visitors, the lower the bar to entry. Monday through Thursday drives rates up; Friday drops them like a failed Series B. Hotels that are $249 midweek often go to $159 on weekends. You can sometimes find well-reviewed motels (like Creekside Inn and The Zen hotel ) for around $100—and that's in pricey Palo Alto.
