The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on Jan. 30 it upgraded what was a preliminary investigation of 2015-17 Ford F-150 pickups to a full investigation of the vehicles. The investigation will cover 1,270,970 vehicles. NHTSA started the preliminary investigation in March 2025 on the pickups. But after more than 60% of surveyed owners reported problems to the NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation, the agency said it decided to update it to a full investigation. A full investigation stops short of a recall, but it could lead to one, something Ford probably wants to avoid, considering the Dearborn-based automaker has led all automakers in the number of recalls for the past few years. Last year, Ford set a record with 153 recalls, according to NHTSA data . Chrysler came in second with 53 recalls, and GM came in third with 28 recalls. So far this year, Ford is again leading in recalls with five, NHTSA data showed. Hyundai and Toyota follow, both with three. When
