In the fall of last year, Ford Motor Co. leaders assigned a small group of workers at the Chicago Assembly plant a job to build a unique Explorer for "a VIP." It was the highest trim level: A Platinum edition. The SUV had some custom requirements too. It had to be all black, with special hand-stitching on the seats and etchings of the Chicago skyline on the step board and on parts of the interior. It had to be a hybrid — a powertrain Ford does not offer in its regular retail Explorer Platinum SUVs — so Ford used the hybrid system in its Police Interceptor SUV for this car. After two months of customizing the mystery vehicle, company spokesman Mark Truby told the Detroit Free Press. managers finally told the workers last month who it was for: Pope Leo XIV.
