AFP via Getty Images At the end of last year and the beginning of this one, numerous analysts and I were forecasting that volatility caused by geopolitics, tariffs, economic uncertainty, and cybersecurity risks would be the biggest challenges for banks. Unfortunately, these risks have intensified significantly since the Iranian war began and are adversely affecting banks. Since the Iranian crisis started, West Texas Intermediate and Brent, the two most important global oil benchmarks, have risen over 50%. Given the extensive use of crude oil to produce gasoline, jet fuel, marine fuel, chemicals, and pesticides, all those prices have risen significantly and have also pushed food prices upward. As long as the war continues, the inflationary effects will be felt globally by financial institutions, corporations, and especially consumers. Higher oil prices will continue to push inflation up.
