Helium supplies are constrained after the world's largest helium factory in Qatar was knocked offline by Iran. (Jim Franco/Jim Franco/Times Union) MALTA - One of the most important gases used in computer chip-making is in short supply and has doubled in price due to the war on Iran. Most high-purity helium is made from methane gas, and about one-third of the world's supply was impacted last month when QatarEnergy's liquified natural gas production facility was damaged by Iranian drone and missile attacks in response to the U.S.-Israel bombing of Iran. Helium is a great gas for the chip industry and its factories because it can be used to quickly cool down machines used in the manufacturing process and to "purge" machines of gases between uses.
