The resulting changes cost the industry billions, but the chief financial officer of General Motors sees ways the shift can still benefit his company. GM CFO Paul Jacobson told attendees of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago's 32nd Annual Automotive Insight Symposium in Detroit on Feb. 4 that he expects GM will grow from the EV production pauses and allow the Detroit automaker to snatch market share. Serious headwinds from tariffs, write-downs from unused EV investment and broken supplier contracts contributed to GM's net loss in 2025, the company said on Jan. 27. In total, GM recorded $7.6 billion in write-downs for downshifting its EV production last year. GM was not alone, however, in writing down losses on unused EV equipment.
