As consumers raced to buy electric cars before the expiration of the $7,500 U.S. tax credit for plug-in and hybrid models last year, 39 states saw increases in the number of electric vehicle registrations during the third quarter of 2025, according to new data released by the Alliance for Automotive Innovation on Feb. 2. The Alliance, which lobbies in Washington for nearly all major carmakers including General Motors, Toyota and Volkswagen, said in its quarterly Get Connected report that EVs represented 10.6% of U.S. auto sales through the first three quarters of 2025, which was a 0.6% increase. The group said Michigan saw the largest increase in EV registrations between the third quarters of 2024 and 2025, with a 4.8% jump. Hawaii had the biggest decrease with a 3.8% drop.
