Video game retailer GameStop is closing stores across the country, USA TODAY network sites confirm. GameStop did not respond to USA TODAY's multiple requests for comment, but closures have been reported in states such as Ohio, California, and Alabama. In a March 2025 filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), GameStop said it planned on closing “a significant number of additional stores in fiscal 2025,” which ends on Jan. 31, 2026, per the documents. In the documents, GameStop said a significant amount of customers have chosen to download games instead of buying games physically in-store. “The current consoles from Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft have facilitated download technology,” GameStop wrote. “If consumers' preference for downloading video game content in lieu of physical software continues to increase, our business and financial performance may be adversely impacted.” When the documents were filed, GameStop said the company closed 590 stores during fisc
