This will be welcome news for the 1.8 million households whose existing fixed-rate mortgages reach the end of their term in 2026. Savers will be less thrilled at the prospect of a reduction in the The government mandates the Bank to hold inflation at 2%, with high interest rates used to sap demand from the economy to bring the rate back towards target. Today's figure of 3.2% is the lowest since it stood at 2.6% last March. The Bank was given access to an estimate of November's inflation data on Monday so it could be used at a meeting of the decision-making Monetary Policy Committee held that day.
