As of March 20, filers have received an average refund of $3,571, up slightly from $3,221 at about the same time last year, the IRS reported in March . That's a $350 – or about 11% – bump. But while average refunds are up, the increase is notably lower than what President Donald Trump's administration promised ahead of tax season. In late January, the White House estimated the average refund would be nearly $1,000 more this year due to provisions like no tax on tips, overtime and car loan interest included in the Trump's sweeping tax bill In 2025, the average federal income tax refund was $3,167 at the end of the filing season. In total, the IRS had already issued about 56.7 million refunds as of March 20, which is about a million more than the same week last year.
