New York-headquartered Corvex has amassed a 6.05pc stake in London-listed Whitbread and called for the company to reconsider its strategy in light of changes introduced in the Chancellor's Autumn Statement. The asset manager called for a strategic review at Whitbread “to assess its capital allocation priorities and overall strategic direction” in light of “the recently announced UK Budget and changes to rateable values and business rates.” Rachel Reeves, the Chancellor, unveiled an overhaul of business rates – a property tax – in the Budget, which triggered higher tax bills for many larger commercial buildings. Whitbread subsequently said it expected to face up to £50m in extra costs. Dominic Paul, Whitbread's chief executive, said he was “extremely disappointed” with the Budget.
