The circular brooch, set with an oval diamond weighing over 13 carats surrounded by nearly 100 old mine-cut diamonds in two concentric rows, was created in a Parisian atelier around 1810. Believed to have adorned Napoleon's bicorne hat, it is fitted with a suspension hook allowing it to be worn as a pendant. This marked the first time the historic jewel had ever appeared at auction. According to Sotheby's, the brooch was seized by the Prussian army following Napoleon's defeat at the Battle of Waterloo. The French emperor reportedly abandoned it—along with his hat and sword—when his carriages became mired in mud during his retreat. After Waterloo, the brooch and other items were presented to Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm III as battle trophies on June 21, 1815.
