Now luxury riads are so synonymous with Morocco—a sort of warm, familial hospitality that's woven into the travel experience—that it can be difficult to imagine that there was a first. But there was a first, of course. And it wasn't the tourist playground of Marrakech or the artisanal capital of Fez. Rather, it was in the surfer-chic coastal town of Essaouira , the one first made semi-famous by Jimi Hendrix's brief visit in the summer of 1969. It was there that Abderrahim and Cornelia Ezzaher, newlyweds in the 1990s, decided to throw off their old lives as an electrical engineer for a multinational in Casablanca and a culinary professor in Switzerland and instead dedicate themselves to this particularly genuine sort of hospitality. Their daughter, Mounia Ezzaher, who is now the manager of Villa Maroc and its newer sister property in the nearby desert (more on that later), tells the story.
