boost earnings from managing that money, it said ?on Thursday, three years after Chief Executive Harvey Schwartz took the job of turning around the ?investment firm. Shares initially rose more than 6%, as Carlyle also approved a $2 billion buyback, before settling to trade 3.6% higher on the day. Schwartz, ?a former Goldman Sachs executive, said he had "systematically reshaped" the company, which unlike most of its peers is based in Washington, D.C., a factor executives said on Thursday gave it an advantage in aerospace and defence investing. Before Schwartz took over, Carlyle had grappled with an industry downturn and an internal succession struggle. It was widely seen as having lagged ?rivals Blackstone, Apollo and KKR, and garnered ?fewer assets to generate fees.
