This year's event takes place on May 4, 2026, as the annual benefit for The Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute and the opening of its spring exhibition, Costume Art With the theme of “Fashion Is Art,” which, according to the Met, “invites guests to express their own relationship to fashion as an embodied art form and celebrate the countless depictions of the dressed body throughout art history.” For menswear, which has traditionally been more conservative, even given the creative license of the Met Gala, this opens up new, and possibly unexpected, avenues for this year's guests. Menswear History As Inspiration This year's theme gives men a fairly wide field to work with. The obvious route is tailoring, but the stronger references may come from elsewhere in menswear history, from sport and utility to subculture and ceremonial dress.
