Vail Resorts' tagline might be the experience of a lifetime, but for millions of skiers across the Mountain West and, not to mention, shareholders, it has been anything but. The snowpack at marquee resorts like the eponymous Vail and Park City, frankly, sucks. Skier visits are down. And the business model of hoovering up land leases and homogenizing the ski resort experience appears to be cracking. WHAT HAPPENED Vail Resorts reported its second-quarter results on Monday and dropped key numbers for the crucial winter season through March 1. The picture is about as ugly as the brown streaks rippling through ski runs across Utah and Colorado. Skier visits are down nearly 12% compared to last season. Ski school revenue is down 8%. Dining revenue is down nearly 9%. Rental revenue, down 6%. I can hear you all saying “stop, it's already dead,” but wait, there's more: Those declines, obviously, mean net income fell from $244 million in the same quarter last year to $210 million this
