"Today is a momentous occasion as we begin production of the third-generation Nissan Leaf in the UK, the electric vehicle that started it all,” said Massimiliano Messina, Nissan Chairperson Africa, Middle East, India, Europe and Oceania (AMIEO), in a press statement. The Leaf debuted at Nissan's Smyrna, Tennessee plant in 2013 and went on to set a then-record with more than 2,000 U.S. deliveries that November. Since then, U.S. demand has subsided. Nissan prioritizes “building where we sell” and meeting demand “is a huge driving factor for the Leaf perspective as well,” Brian Crockett, vice president of Nissan's Smyrna Vehicle Assembly Plant, told The Tennessean in June. “The Leaf does extremely well in the European market, it does extremely well in the [Asian] market,” Crockett said. “It does okay in the U.S. market, but it doesn't justify building it in three different locations.” In November 2024, Nissan opted to shift manufacturing of its upcoming next-generation model f
