Regulatory Agency approved a higher 7.2 milligram weekly dose of its weight-loss medicine Wegovy for individuals who are overweight.Patients with a body mass index of 30 kg/m or greater can now get three 2.4 mg injections on the same day each week, along with a diet limited in calories and exercise. This additional dose option was approved on January 6. Patients who are overweight and below that level or who are using Wegovy to lower their risk of heart disease are not allowed to get the larger dose.Patients usually start with 0.25 mg per week and slowly raise the dose until they reach 2.4 mg. After that, they can start the 7.2 mg regimen. Novo Nordisk noted that the new option gives healthcare providers more options for treating extreme obesity.The decision shows that more and more regulators are backing GLP-1-based treatments like Wegovy and Ozempic. This has pushed Novo Nordisk's market value to all-time highs because there is so much demand for them around the world.
