Costco is aiming to speed up the checkout process at its warehouses with new, automated checkout stations. The retailer's CFO, Gary Millerchip, said in an earnings call this month that Costco is "piloting automated pay stations," according to The New York Post Millerchip stated that the new systems would "allow members to pay for their pre-scan orders seamlessly with an average transaction time of around eight seconds," as reported by The New York Post. Costco employees have begun "pre-scanning" customers' items while they wait in line, allowing customers to simply scan their IDs at the register and pay. "Early results show this is improving the flow of traffic, and we have received great member feedback," Millerchip said during the earnings call. Select Costco locations offer self-checkout options, including Costco's Norwalk location, but most of its warehouses only offer staffed checkout lanes.
